Tour De France

Maillot blanc

The Maillot blanc (French for white jersey) is the jersey given to the best young rider in the Tour de France. The winner must be under the age of 25 on January 1 the year of the Tour. In the event that a young rider wins both the overall competition as well as the young riders competition, the rider foregoes the Maillot blanc in favour of the leader's Maillot jaune, as was the example in 1997, where Peter Luttenberger won the white jersey, even though overall winner Jan Ullrich was only 23 years of age. The official Tour de France site[1] lists Peter Luttenberger as the winner of the white jersey that year. A similar situation happened when Laurent Fignon won both the tour and the mailot blanc in 1983, but no winner of the white jersey is listed at the official site for that year.
