The Famous Adelphi Hotel

Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool

The Adelphi was built in 1826 only to be rebuilt in 1912. It has a massive 402 bedrooms. The Hotel was originally built to accommodate posh travellers when Liverpool was a major port for the transatlantic passenger trade, when all the big liners used to visit.

The Adelphi Hotel is Liverpool's biggest and most imposing hotel, very much a part of Scouse culture because very few people could actually afford to stay there who came from Liverpool. I always wanted to look inside as a youngster but was frightened in case someone chased you off. I am sure this was not really true but that's how it felt.

I was born in Wavertree in 1960 and went to school at Holt Comprehensive at the Fveways in Childwall, I remember the Adelphi when famous stars visited there , it was very high class back then!

The Adelphi hotel was a place I was in awe of as a child. What a let down to our city it is now. The steps in the front are always filthy with rubbish and take away food. I wish it was like it was years ago with the man in his red uniform and top hat outside and a red carpet on the steps.
