Dragon Fly - Broad-bodied Chaser

Dragon Fly - Broad-bodied Chaser - Creative Commons Picture

We found this amazing Dragonfly in a pond near Warrington, Cheshire in June 2009. This is the male of the species as it has a blue coloured body, the female has a brown body. Its official name is Libellula depressa.

We thought it was a rarity but is very common but that does not detract from its beauty of course. It has an interesting way of flight, darting here and there. It appeared to patrolling the pond as it flew from one perch to another on the reed bed chasing off other males and eating everything in sight that moved.
