Callanish Stones, Isle of Lewis, Scotland

These standing stones are magical. They look like a group of old men contemplating the nature of the universe. The miracle is that they have stood on the Isle of Lewis for thousands of years largely undamaged. Please don't go there, not because it is not worth seeing, it is very special, but because it might turn into the circus that is Stonehenge. Let the souls of ancient peoples who inhabit these places rest in peace and no Wallace Arnold coaches, please !

From Carnac to Callanish: Prehistoric Stone Rows of Britain, Ireland and Brittany By A Burl from Amazon.co.uk

"I found Aubrey Burl's book 'From Carnac to Callanish' this book has them all, from Brittany to the Hebrides in fascinating detail. First published in 1993, it is a gem of a book that is as detailed as it is readable"
