Bolsover Castle, Bolsover, Derbyshire

Bolsover Castle is in the County of Derbyshire. When one drives up to it from Chesterfield one can see it clearly perched on a hillside that dominates the countryside for miles around. Yet this is not a true castle, though I am sure it could be defended. This is a palace of pleasure built in the middle ages. Owned by the Cavendish family and now by English Heritage it is a truly remarkable structure. The Little Castle was the first to be built and contains little treasures such as the stone marble fireplaces, many erotic wall frescos, references to Roman mythology and even the Christian saints.

The gardens have seats for 'lovers' nestled in the walls. We won't tell you much more because it really is worth a visit not only for the castle itself but for the magnificent views across Derbyshire. The restaurant serves a truly punchy Cappuccino and Latté, they have their own brand of coffee which you can buy and take home. If you are passing Bolsover it is worth just nipping in for a cup of coffee whilst sitting in a truly medieval setting.
